RUNR™ - The High Speed Data Network for Rail

Modern communication systems have transformed the way we communicate at home, in the office and on the road. This transformation is also taking place on trainborne communication systems. Today's passengers and rail operators have come to expect features and capabilities that only yesterday were considered advanced and state-of-the-art.

Advanced on-board rail car equipment that provides: passenger information, CCTV, communications, passenger and operator intercom systems, monitoring & diagnostics, event recorders, automatic passenger counting, wireless communications and video displays are becoming the norm - not the exception. Use of high-speed IP networks is becoming a preferred approach to implement advanced railcar communication systems but, with this improved capability and performance is a need for a data communications backbone that is able to support such systems.

The need for faster data communications has long been recognized - how to implement it across an entire consist, and in particular, across the electronic coupler system, is another matter. The APTA Communications Subcommittee has recognized this trend and is currently reviewing a new recommended practice for all new rail transit CCTV (Mobile) systems to have a minimum communication network capable of supporting a 100Base-T network, including across the coupler.

GeoFocus' RUNR™ for Reliable Ultra-fast Network for Rail is a (patent pending) 10/100Base-T Ethernet communications network. It is designed to provide a high-bandwidth communications backbone across electronic couplers by transferring energy between two adjacent magnetic devices (ETHERPIN™.) in much the same way a transformer works. See the GeoFocus product information for more details.
