RUNR™ - The High Speed Data Network for Rail
GeoFocus, LLC, a premier provider of real time transportation communications and information management systems, and an OEM system integrator for rail car builders, has announced full production of its RUNR product which stands for Reliable Ultra-fast Network for Rail. Production units are currently being installed on new light rail vehicle systems on two properties in the United States scheduled to start revenue service in December 2008 and mid 2009.
RUNR (patent pending) is a proprietary technology designed to provide a high-bandwidth 10/100Base-T Ethernet communications backbone across an entire consist of passenger rail vehicles. An ETHERPIN. interface, based on electromagnetic coupling technology, is used to support the networked connection across the vehicle.s electronic coupler system without physical contact of coupler pins.
Regular electronic coupler contacts must make physical contact and are susceptible to dust, dirt, corrosion and signal noise caused by unequal contact pressures that occur during normal movement of the vehicle. The magnetically coupled, non-contact, ETHERPINs eliminate these problems making this system low maintenance, highly reliable and accurate with a very low bit error rate (BER).
By using RUNR for the interconnection of on-board systems the need for costly car wiring is minimized and it enables users to fully benefit from the advantages of using IP-addressable systems and equipment. The ability to easily mix and match IP-addressable equipment from different manufacturers permits greater competition and easier second sourcing for sub-systems such as: passenger information, CCTV, communications, passenger and operator intercom systems, monitoring & diagnostics, event recorders, automatic passenger counting, wireless communications and video displays. RUNR.s high bandwidth also supports value-added applications such as Internet and entertainment services.
RUNR meets the recent APTA Communications Subcommittee recommendation for trainline communications to support a minimum full-duplex transmission rate of 100Base-T for Closed Circuit TV (CCTV) systems.
Currently produced for new passenger rail car applications, RUNR technology could also be retrofitted into existing fleets and used for applications in the defense, aerospace and medical industries.
